  • Description

Chopped strand mat (CSM) is a type of reinforcement material commonly used in the production of fibreglass composites. It consists of randomly orientated glass fibres that are cut into short strands and bonded together using an emulsion binder. CSM is one of the most widely used fibreglass reinforcement materials due to its versatility, ease of use, and relatively low cost.

Beneficial properties of Chopped Strand Mat:

    • Random fibre orientation: The fibres in chopped strand mat are randomly orientated, which results in good multi-directional strength.
    • Lightweight: CSM is relatively light compared to some other types of composite reinforcements, making it easier to handle during production processes like moulding and lamination.
    • Good surface finish: CSM is often used for producing parts that require a smooth surface, as it helps reduce the need for finishing work once the composite is formed.

    Common applications:

    • Construction - chopped strand mat is used in GRP flat roofing applications - a popular choice due to its durability and water resistance.
    • Marine - CSM is widely used in the construction of boats and other marine craft.
    • Automotive - fibreglass mat is widely used in the construction of structural automotive parts such as bonnets and body panels.
    • Sports & Leisure - chopped strand mat is used in the manufacture of surfboards, skis and other fibreglass sporting equipment.
